THE TRIANGLE OF UPBRINGING
We all know this African proverb. The person who came up with this proverb most probably pointed at the entire youth period of a child and must have thought about many of the same aspects of an all-round healthy youth development, as we do when we think about our own children’s upbringing. Besides the qualities needed as a member of the family and the community, we want our children to develop the physical, emotional, mental and social skills to fully enjoy living each day of their lives. This takes a strong support system and looking at this proverb in our modern epoch, for us, most of the time, that "village” is missing. Closely knit communities are rare; the African situation seems to be “far from our bed”.
SAFE in SCHOOLS believes that the importance of assembling all the people who have a positive educational influence on our children is not only more needed than ever, it is truly possible! If you look at the research done about Positive School Climates, you will see that the importance of dynamic School – Family – Community partnerships is one of the main factors. Pretty much like what the African proverb says, isn’t it? We now just have to create our own village!
Many schools, in their mission statements, do aspire to do all this. Unfortunately nowadays, this often seems to have become a “mission impossible”. One of the reasons is that the "teachers’ jobs" becomes increasingly overwhelming– and they already play additional roles of psychologists, social workers and substitute parents. The number of kids, in often too full classrooms, who have learning, attention, motivation and/or behavioral challenges increase every year, while at the same time “from above” the budgets for supporting programs and staff (educators, behaviour technicians, guidance counselors, psychologist, etc.) get cut, more & more. In politics, education is "very important" during election time. However for many of us education is always the foundation of our daily lives and the most important key to our future.
The time has come for strong and sustainable school - family - community partnerships...
Also involving the community centers and other youth organizations around us...
It is time to create our own VILLAGE, right within our schools and our own neighbourhoods!
On the Services and Leadership Programs pages, you can find out how SAFE in SCHOOLS can start spreading its magic in your school (or other organization). We offer programs totally complementary to any program already in place in the school.
This is how families and the community can support the programs:
Choosing for (public) education always goes with some “wishful thinking”. As parents we all assume that, besides educating our children well in the academics, the school curriculum - and those who execute it - also takes care of thorough physical education (nowadays including lessons in nutrition, hygiene and healthy lifestyles), art education and moral / ethics education. On top of that we wish that our children’s school experience brings about fine daily social skills, not only in school, but also at home…
The Triangle of Upbringing
We call the whole team of parents, neighbours, teachers and others who help in educating - in the large sense - young and older children:
